Important Questions to Ask Before Undergoing an Eyelid Surgery
As a person ages, excess fat as well as skin accumulate in certain areas of the body. These signs of aging affect even the eyes. When these happen, you may always have that fatigued, tired, old, and even and angry look. One major factor that causes this to happen is aging. As you grow older, the muscles surrounding the eyes weaken, the skin around the eyelids stretches, and ultimately, fat will accumulate and surround the area around the eyes. This condition is commonly referred to as “eye bags” and may not only make you look older, but may also affect your eyesight. However, there is a of medical procedure that can help you solve this eye condition called eyelid surgery.
Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to eliminate fat accumulation as well as excess muscle and skin from the eyelids. This procedure can be performed on either the upper eyelids or lower eyelids.
If both your upper and lower eyelids are affected, you can also choose to have eyelid surgery performed on them. Blepharoplasty is recommended to individuals who would like to look younger than their actual age, appear more alert, and of course look a lot more refreshed. While this type of cosmetic surgery can help you appear vibrant and younger, there are some questions that you need to ask before you undergo eyelid surgery.
What are the different types of eyelid surgery?
There are several types of eyelid surgery that are used to enhance the appearance of the eyelids. Here are the following types of blepharoplasty:
- Upper Eyelid Surgery
This type of blepharoplasty is used to improve two of the most common problem areas. The first area is the excess skin affecting the upper eyelid that is often referred to as the “hooding of the upper eyelid.” The next problem area that this type of eyelid surgery improves is the puffiness in the middle as well as the inner corner of the upper eyelid. This problem is usually caused by herniation of fat. Since these common eyelid problems can also affect your eyesight, upper eyelid surgery can be used to improve your overall look as well as prevent problems with your vision.
- Lower Eyelid Surgery
This type of eyelid surgery is performed in order to eliminate the puffiness located in the lower eyelid. This puffiness is what most people refer to as “eye bags” and they appear under the eyes. This is caused by the accumulation of excess fat and excess skin that can result from several factors, including aging. A person who is affected by the accumulation of fat and skin around the eye area will always appear tired, fatigued, and look older. If you are experiencing this problem, undergoing a lower eyelid surgery can bring back your rested, alert, and younger appearance.
- Asian Eyelid Surgery
As Western eyes are different from Asian eyes, the Asian eyelid surgery is specifically designed to improve the appearance of Asians. The major difference between Asian eyelids from Western eyes is the anatomical structure of the orbital septum.
Orbital septum is the layer of the eyes that is responsible for holding back the fat. With Asian eyelids, this layer extends further down towards the margin of the eyelids. This type of surgery is similar to the more traditional eyelid surgery, but will ensure that the ethnic features will remain. Asian eyelid surgery is also referred to as the double eyelid operation or the Asian blepharoplasty.
What are the benefits of undergoing eyelid surgery?
There are many reasons why you should consider undergoing eyelid surgery. While these reasons may vary from one person to another, the most common benefits of undergoing blepharoplasty include:
- Improvement in the peripheral vision
- Having a more alert and refreshed appearance
- Restoring the youthful appearance of the eyelids
- Increased self confidence
- Improved overall appearance
How is eyelid surgery performed?
Performing eyelid surgery takes around one to three hours to complete. This will depend on the extent of the surgery and depends on the areas of the eyelids that the surgeon will perform the procedure on. If the eyelid surgery will be performed on all four eyelids, the time needed to complete the procedure will be longer.
Some surgeons may give local anesthesia to their patients. This means that the patient will be awake while the surgery is being performed, but they will not feel any pain. There are also some surgeons who may give their patients with general anesthesia, which means that the patient will be asleep during the procedure.
If the patient will be undergoing an upper eyelid surgery, the doctor will create an incision that will follow the natural eyelid lines. Through these incisions, the surgeon will remove a crescent of excess muscle, any fat accumulation, and skin. Once this has been done, the doctor will then close the incision with sutures that will leave almost invisible scars.
In performing a lower eyelid surgery, the doctor will make an incision that will also follow the natural lines of the lower eyelids. These incisions will be made below the lashes located in the lower lids. The doctor may either remove the fatty deposits from inside of the lower eyelid, or he may also reposition these deposits. When there is a need to remove excess skin, the doctor will perform a skin pinch by making an incision under the lashes in order to prevent leaving a visible scar. The doctor will then close the incision using fine sutures.
